Mobility Access

We would advise patrons with mobility difficulties to contact us to discuss their requirements if they are concerned.

General information

  • The Oasthouse Theatre is a listed building and, as such, we are limited in the alterations we can make to accommodate our less mobile patrons. We are also restricted by space in both public and backstage areas.
  • The fire escape is a set of steps (approx. 15) into Stratford Lane. There is a handrail on both sides.
  • The main staircase has a handrail on one side.
  • The other side of the main staircase is fitted with a stair lift. Theatre staff will be happy to provide assistance with this.

Ground Floor

  • There is a single step down into the lower foyer from Stratford Lane.
  • Once inside, the ground floor of the theatre (lower foyer, bar, Green Room, dressing room) is level.
  • The toilets are situated on the ground floor. Both male and female toilets have a single step access (approx. 4-5 inches deep), and the main entrance to the male toilets has restricted opening.

  • [Stepped entrance to toilets]
  • There are no handrails (grab rails) or any other modifications in either the male nor female toilets.

First Floor

  • The auditorium at the Oasthouse Theatre is located on the first floor.
  • The upstairs foyer and auditorium entrance is level.
  • There are no wheelchair spaces in the auditorium per se, but it is possible for a wheelchair to occupy a position next to seat A1 at the entrance to the auditorium. However, this will have a restricted view of the rear, left of the stage (from an audience perspective).
  • There are no handrails in the auditorium. There is only one central aisle.
  • The auditorium is tiered with a shallow step (approx. 3-4 inches high) between each row.

Backstage Areas

  • The backstage bathroom (ground floor) for cast use also has a single step entrance.
  • There is a single step entrance to the kitchen area (ground floor).
  • Access to the backstage area from the dressing room is via a staircase that takes a 90° turn part way.
  • There is a deep step from the backstage floor up to stage level (both from the backstage stairs and when entering the backstage area from the upper foyer).
  • Entrance to the Wardrobe kiln is via a steep set of steps. There is a handrail on one side of the steps. The top step is disproportionally deep.
  • Entrance to the backstage storage kiln (for drops, flats, construction materials, and props) is via a steep set of open steps (working oasthouse originals). There is no handrail and, like those of the wardrobe, the top step into the kiln is disproportionally deep.
