Saturday 9th November 1963 - The public’s first reactions.
The general public were admitted to witness the first production in “The World’s Only Oasthouse Theatre” (at the time!) - It is now known to be “The World’s first Oasthouse Theatre”. The only complaint came from the back few rows not being able to see properly. During the interval Norman Booth quipped “Maybe we should measure you all when you book your seats!”
The seating was raised by the time the pantomime lifted its curtain in January 1964, much to the audience’s delight.
